Eiffel Tower Sculpture

As a tribute to the november 2015 attacks, me and a few others decided to construct and eiffel tower out of card, along with 129 paper stars to represent the fallen victims.

To do this we used scalpels and cutting mats to remove detailed sections to represent the eiffel tower's intricate design. We made 4 initial bases for the tower; one for each of the sides, and ensured that we made tabs and slots for each face. By using tabs and slots, we were able to slot the tower into shape; forming the finished product.

Collages

For this task we were given a selection of random images that we had to make collages from. To start with, we had to close our eyes and drop said images onto the paper, and take a photo of how they landed. This meant we were lowering our inhibitions and organising the photos in a way we wouldnt consciously have done otherwise. From here we then arranged them in a way which we would consciously present them. Below is an example of this; the blind collage shown on the left, and the arranged one on the right (for the one on the right, i also added a body of text, as i wanted a feel of what it would look like if it was actually a design in a newspaper or magazine).

Below are more examples of photos i took while doing this task. Some are blind collages and the others are ones i've formally arrranged.

Abstract Photo Collage

This is a collage i made using photoshop. To do this, i went out and took photos of my university from various angles (both inside and out) and uploaded these photos into photoshop, where i began to slot them all together into making this digital collage. The reason i think this works relatively well is because despite the photos being took from different angles, the overal image has one main perspective point (slightly off the center of it; towards the left) therefore it still slightly resembles a building.

Paper Techniques

At the start of our project we were asked to experiment with a sheet of paper and see how many methods/techniques we could use in order to form a letter from the alphabet. Below are a selection of examples from my experimentation. I have played around with both 2D and 3D forms, as well as using both negative and positive space in order to get quite a variety of different outcomes.

Life Drawing

This is a drawing i created while studying a live model. The model was a young female adult sat on a chair infront of me, and i had approximately half an hour to make a study of her and this is the final outcome. I used 2B and 6B pencils to do this, and i am rather satisfied with the result.

Textures and Patterns

These are some of the prints i created when using inks to form different kinds of patterns. For the monochrome ones, i used sponges and cloths dipped in black ink to print different kinds of shapes and textures, then printed them onto white paper and card.
To continue with the texture making experimentation, i also made the coloured designs using wallpaper paste mixed with acrylic paint. I layered this micture onto paper, then used cut up crdit cards and plastic cutlery to carve out shapes and patterns.

For the image on the right, i did a couple of these designs, then ripped them up and wove them together, creating a more creative outcome.

Crushed Packaging Studies

these are some observational drawings i have done of everyday crushed packaging. For both drawings, i used shading pencils to do the initial tone and linework, before using biros and felt-tips to intensify the contrast and contribute more to the shaded areas. i tried to focus on making the typography looked rather morphed, as the crushed nature of the packets made it bend in ways that made it look rather dis-proportionate and disfigured.

Vinyl Lettering

After creating the initial design of my typography using ink, i then scanned it into adobe illustrator in order to tranform it into a vector. From here, i printed it onto vinyl which was then placed onto the front cover of my sketch book. i really like this because i think the glossy black vinyl ontop of the matte black sketchbook looks really aesthetically pleasing.

Hand Lettering

After learning how to work with ink in order to create typography, we were asked to write our name on a white sheet of paper in order to use it for the cover of our sketchbooks. Although this typography is more or less my regular handwriting, i placed the “katie” on top of the ‘T’ in order to give it a little more excitement, rather than just placing the two words side by side.

Type in the Environment

This is the outcome of the task i was set; “construct a word associated with a paper technique and place it in an appropriate environment”. Paper techniques are things such as; cutting, folding, tearing, burning, ripping etc, and the word i decided to go for was “burn”, which i crafted with paper foamboard. i figured the best suitable environment for this word would be in an actual open fire, which I’m quite happy with as i think the singed edges add a nice effect to the word.

Observational Drawings

As a part of our course, we were asked to to create a selection of observational drawings which we had studied from life. These drawings mainly featured mundane, everyday objects, and i used a variety of techniques when creating them in order to make each of them unique in their own way. Below are a few examples of the drawings i created, with a short summary beneath each of them; explaining my thought processes and methods used.

This is my observational study of two house plants. This was originally a drawing that i created with back marker pen, but after scanning it into Adobe Illustrator and making it into a vector, i was left with this rather nice digital design.

Typography Design

This is a design that i have created for a graphic design quote. It was originally made using felt tips on white paper, however i scanned it into illustrator and turned it into a vector image in order to turn it into a digital creation.

Mark Making

After making our own ink pens out of cut-up drinks cans and wooden sticks, we began to use them in order to practice some mark making. The images above are some examples of the experiments i had when using this technique. I used the alphabet as the subject for my experiementation.

Letter 'Y' - Paper

As well as the task to make 26 individual letters (previous post), everyone in the class was also given the task to create an A3 letterform. Each person was given a different letter of the alphabet, meaning that we collectively created the whole alphabet; each letter created with a different technique. I was given the letter 'Y' and decided to use negative space via using a scalpel to cut out the letter and use the remaining paper around it as my submission to the alphabet.

Alphabet Letters

For one of my tasks, i was asked to make the entire alphabet out of paper. To do this, i decided to try and be original and to branch away from the standard 2D letter forms that paper usually consists of, and instead tried to focus on a 3D method.

This method consisted of making a cube out of paper, then carving the letters out of one of the six faces. I made 26 of these cubes; one for every letter of the alphabet. i have included photos of a few examples.

Mind Map

This was the first thing i did for this module. The photo to the right shows the mind map i made right at the start of the year which shows all the different forms that paper can be found in. This was to familiarise myself with the concept of paper, as i knew my entire project would be focused around it.
